Poem: Past and Future

Past and Future

With great effort
do we reach behind
ourselves
across the threshold
of pain
so that the door to our past
cannot close.

What good would it be
to lay upon the floor
with no tears?

Of what use
would great joy have,
if not brightly eclipsing
great despair?…
Keep the door open.

The future is a hallway
with walls we cannot touch
and an end we cannot see
and the mind sharpens itself
like a pencil
and writes in the blank air
using a stencil
borrowed from the fear
that things will not be different
than they have been before.

What good would it be
to find yourself half alive
as you are now
in the future?

Of what use
would all this suffering be,
if not to show you how to fight
for your very liberation?
Keep writing my friend…it is worth every word.
