Poetry: Even in the Dark

Andromeda_galaxy_Ted_Van_August_2012

I am not going to write you flowers.
When so near the gravesite
such words are best placed
in silence.

Rest here, lay on your back.
Stars struck
with your one brilliant life
looking down curious
about tears,
they will never know.

Have you felt
how familiar you are
to the firmament?
Do you wonder
how many times
they have seen you?
Adrift as you are
in this Holy Land
trading shapes
outlived by traveling stars…
how can you say that are
a stranger?
Or that we’ve never met?
When the heavens have watched us
begin and conclude
over millenia?

We say things like…
“Goodbye.”
and
“Hello.”
and
“Excuse me but have we met before?”

Oh,
how familiar
the star’s gaze makes us to one another…
even in the dark
we can see.
