Poetry: A Life on Earth

Reverse the diaspora
rescind this
fleeting exogenesis.
The Earth still drinks
and will not be thirsty
without us.

What right have we
to outlive
every other
living thing?…
When it is the distractions
we use
to hide from how we are not
really living,
that makes other being
no longer live?

Ignorance is
a greened field of tall grasses
and apathy like the rain and sun…
the future always holds
the promise of a great reward
All of this has been
all we really needed
to unseat ourselves
from the throne of conscience.

What is real in the mind
destroys
over time
what is real to the heart.
It can be no other way.
Because given enough time
the mind will wear down the truth
until the heart must die
and be reborn again
to see it.

Why can’t love take root
in your life,
in an obvious way?
The mind is the gardner
and stripped all that grows, away.

Will I have a candle for you
in all this dark?
Or point relentlessly to all that’s
stark?

My candle is you.
And us.
And we.
If I light it, it isn’t yours.
If you light someone else’s
it isn’t theirs.

My question is what
will inflame you enough
to burst your heart
into enduring light?
The answer
will always be…
“a life on Earth”.
