Poetry: Just Like Me

I have never owned
a thought.
They’ve always
been borrowed
from people
just
like
me.

I have never owned
the truth.
It’s a free flow
a let go
a tap tap
tapping at the window
saying “look outside
now
and see what’s always
been true”
for people
just
like
me.

I have owned guilty.
Toted around laden suitcases
of the stuff,
and booked one way trips
to the bottom.
Guilt has been mine.
Treasured slick thing,
like wearing
a shame blame ring
too heavy to swim with
so much to sink into
we won’t get a redo
it’s a dark deep depth
for people
just
like
me.

If love be real
why can’t we feel
it always?
Who can explain
the lost years
when we can’t?
Only the lost.
After they’re found.

People
just
like
me…say
“There but for the grace of God go I”
Goes who?
Goes you.

If you want to know how
your more than what you’ve borrowed
that guilt only holds you
as long as you hold onto it
then you must go
to the places where God’s grace
saved you from.
Reach in and with an open heart
help people

just
like
you.
