Wings & Piano Strings

These fingers,
they type.
But this mouth stays closed.
But either way
the words come
from the same place.

There is a
piano
sitting in a room
without light.
Mute keys
say nothing.
Even in the dark
our hands can find
our mark,
and sound
enters this world
from the first one.

Flight
is a conversation
between feathered wings
and a sky.
Creation’s aviary,
cage without walls
bordered only
by gravity
without which
we’d all float
and flight
an impossibility.

The only reason
one of us
quits helping another
is because someone stopped
helping us
or
no one ever started.

Have you a heart?
It’s like a piano
in the dark.
You can’t make music
out of this life
until you are willing
to stumble.
You have to reach
for what you can’t see.
You have to speak
with more than words.
You’ll have to fly
and talk to the wind
but it will never tell you
from which direction
your next change will come,
but it will say…
that’s what your wings are for.

Love this, Charlie. So true. I read it and it puts my last relationship in a place I can understand. I mean I’d seen it before, but this says it so succinctly.

Also, the final stanza is a poem all unto itself. It stands on its own feet not needing any of the previous stanzas to prop it up.

    Love Paul
